Project Overview
Legend Hire was engaged to design and install a temporary back propping system beneath an existing car park slab at Southbank Parklands ahead of a large public concert. With a substantial stage structure, production equipment and thousands of attendees expected above the suspended slab, organisers needed confidence the structure could safely manage the additional loads.
The solution reinforced the slab, ensured public safety, and was delivered within a tight pre-event installation window.
Engineering challenge
The project presented multiple engineering and logistical limitation:
- Significant temporary live loads from stage infrastructure, rigging and crowd density
- Uncertainty regarding the slab’s capacity under peak event conditions
- Requirement for a temporary works solution compliant with public safety expectations
- Tight installation timeframe ahead of the scheduled event
Failure to adequately manage load transfer posed risks to structural integrity and event continuity.
Temporary back propping solution
Legend Hire delivered a purpose designed back propping system engineered to safely redistribute loads from the suspended slab to the supporting structure below.
Installed System
- 220 × Legend Multi Prop MP350
- 440 × ¼ sleepers installed top and bottom
The sleeper configuration increased the load distribution footprint, reducing point loading and enabling controlled, even transfer of forces through the propping system.
This approach ensured the temporary works solution functioned as an integrated structural support system rather than isolated props.
